Monarchs of South Africa[]
The following chart illustrates all the historic monarchs of South Africa to show the connection between the pre-1961 and post-1985 regimes. South Africa was formed as a dominion of the British Empire in 1910 and ruled by the House of Windsor for half a century. It became a republic in 1961. Andrew's accession as head of state in 1985 was at first meant to be a restoration of the former regime and intended to unite the entire country. In 1987 the country abandoned this goal, but the monarch continued to use the title King of South Africa.
