East Africa, officially the East African Federation, is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It borders Uganda and Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the east (including maritime borders with Comoros), Mozambique and Malawi to the south, Zambiezia to the southwest, and Rwanda, Burundi and Zaïre to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, is in northeastern East Africa.

Its surface area of 588,981 square miles makes East Africa the ninth-largest country in Africa and the 29th-largest in the world. With a population of over 42.9 million inhabitants, it is the sixth-most populous country in Africa and the 30th in the world.

History[]

In 1962, the leaders of Tanganyika, Kenya, and Zanzibar met in Dar es Salaam to discuss the merger of the 3 states. Eventually, the nations managed to create a deal that is favorable to all, along with a process for future nations to join the Federation.

Upon the Federation's creation and independence on the 26th of April, 1963, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi were invited to join the federation. However, the 3 nations declined but still wished to keep close economic ties with the EAF.
