East Greece, or the Kingdom of Greece (Greek: Βασίλειον τῆς Ἑλλάδος) is a country located in Southeast Europe. It is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. East Greece shares land borders with Turkey to the east, Bulgaria to the north, and West Greece to the west by the Thrace Demilitarized Zone. The Aegean Sea lies to the west of the mainland, the Black Sea to the northeast, and the Sea of Crete and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Constantinople is the country's capital and largest city, followed by Smyrna.
Greece emerged as a modern nation-state in 1830 following the war of independence. During World War I, it was allied with the Entente Powers, thus receiving territory in Western Anatolia, localized between the International Zone of the Straits. During World War II, it fell into civil war, following the Metaxas regime. It was invaded by the Front, soon after being liberated by the Allies. The country would fall into war again, ending with the Greek Armistice Agreement, which established the Thrace Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), dividing Greece into the German-aligned Hellenic People's Republic and the British-aligned Kingdom of Greece.
East Greece is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy. It was admitted to the United Nations along with its Western counterpart in 1973. It is also a member of the OCDE and the G20. The country has been in significant tension with West Greece, despite mutual agreements in Thrace and the attempts at reconciliation in later years. The country is also a highly developed country and its armed forces are ranked as one of the world's strongest militaries.
