The Eastern States of America, also known as the United States of Eastern America is a state encompassing the Eastern parts of the former United States of America. It is considered the most legitimate successor to the United States because it was founded by America's last Vice President Dan Quayle.
History[]
Formation of the Eastern States[]
President Bush tried fleeing to the Congressional bunker under the Greenbrier Hotel but Air Force One crashed. Vice President Dan Quayle made it safety to the Greenbrier bunker. The survivors at the bunker soon started scanning ham radio frequencies and found out that the damage to America was surprisingly low. The people at the Greenbrier then started contacting the surviving remnants of the army and the states' governments to start forming an American provisional government under Dan Quayle.
The Quayle Administration[]
Dan Quayle ran the American provisional government for ten years of martial law. Despite his advocacy for Christian and traditional family values he was fairly moderate and not the far right-wing tyrant that some his critics try to make him out to be. Despite his right values he was known for clamping down on militant Christian cults and far right-wing militia who around harassing people who disagreed with the vision of America. In 1994, Kemtucky Tennessee, Pamlico, Piedemont Connecticut, Rhode Island Massachusetts Meramick Berkshire Hudson Adirondack Niagara and Mitchell became the first states to join the American provisional after the founding states. West Virgia Maryland Virgina Ohio, New Jersey Delaware and Susquehanna Alngany and leigh , joined in 1996. During the early Quayle administration the American government was based in West Virginia. In 1999, the capital was moved to Indianapolis. The first post-war elections war were held in 2000. Quayle gloriously accepted defeat at the hands of Al Gore.
The Gore Administration[]
The end of martial law with the election of Al Gore was celebrated as a sign of America's recovery. One of Gore's first acts was renaming the American provisional government The Eastern States of America. In 2001, the Vermont-based Republic of New England and several Canadian rump states decided to join the Eastern States to defend themselves from the hostile Peoples Republic of Quebec. In 2003, Gore declared war on the Second Confederacy, because of poor human rights records and imperialist activities. The Eastern States defeated the Confederacy and annexed their lands east of the Mississippi.
The Wilder Administration[]
Al Gore was succeed by Doug Wilder. Doug Wilder was known for his tough on crime and terrorism polices. Wilder's polices were hardened after a failed coup attempt by Senator Trump. So people says that Wilder's police became too tough after the coup. After leaving office Wilder wrote a memoir in he stated that he, too, sometimes worried that police were harmful to the American ideal of freedom. Doug Wilder got the credit for passing universal health care but it was really Vice President Joe Biden who did most of the advocating for legislation. Wilder sent an ambassador to Quebec after the anti-Anglo communist regime fell in 2013.
The Kasich Administration[]
The victory of John Kasich in 2016 marked the first time the democrats lost control of the presidency since Dan Quayle's term ended. Kasich's victory is believed to be so strong by his opponent Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden splitting the liberal vote. Kasich is pushing a ban on abortion but he can't get it passed due to a liberal senate. He did mange to get a tax cut passed in 2017. Kasich has to deal with a small but vocal sednist movement in newelang and the former Canadian state. The members of the movement are most supporters of the progressive party who felt that the system is rigged against them

The Eastern States technically provides universal education but there are few areas down south education was restarted after the war. Several universities were either destroyed in the war or never responded after it. But the Eastern States still has a good number of universities. The Ivy League still exists although they lost Princeton, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Colgate University, Colby University and Buchile University have filled the three empty spots in the Ivy League.

Today the Eastern States is the world's second largest producer of biofuel. Gore invested substantially into wind, solar and hydro power.

There was still some glass manufacturing going on in Toledo during 1989. The lack of international trade during the 90's and early 2000's led to some growth in the glass output of Toledo. It started declining when foreign imports returned by glass output still a little higher then 1989. International Relations[]
Ties are close with the heartland states and the second republic. There were allies in the war against the confederacy. Texas and heartland held failed referendum on reuniting with the Eastern States in 2010. A second reunification reuduern in 2018 resulted in plans for talks on forming a trade and military alliance called the North American Coalition. The Pacific States, the Rocky Mountain States Canada, the Mexican breakaway states and even Quebec have been invited to the talks.
Relations with Canada are a bit strained due to parts of Ontario and the Maritimes joining the Eastern States to protect themselves form the Anglo-hating Communist government of Quebec.

Media[]
The state-run National Broadcasting System started radio broadcasts in 1998 and started TV broadcasting in 2004.

The privately owned CBS (named for the pre-Doomsday company) and Zenith Broadcasting company were founded in 2006.
Cable TV returned in 2008.
Internet reached the United States in 2010. Access was limited at first but increased immensely due to government support. (It still is less then it is in OTL).
The three local film and TV producer are Metropolitan Films Renaissance studios and Evolution Studios.
National Anthem[]
Back during the Quayle Administration, the American Provisional Government used the Star Spangled Banner as its Anthem. After Al Gore became president and renamed American Provisional Government the Eastern States, Gore decided the nation needed a new national Anthem. So he held a contest in Indianapolis inviting bands from all over the Eastern States including the newly incorporated territories. The winner was a song called We Built this Nation. We Built this Nation was written by a little known rock group from Cleveland and set to the tune of We Built This City by Star-Ship. So, conservatives pointedly complained that the new national anthem was set to one of an anti-government protest song. Gore responded by pointing out that the Star Spangled Banner was sung to the tune of a British drinking song - To Anacreon in Heaven.
We Built This Nation Lyrics[]
We built this nation. We built this nation on hope and dreams We built this nation. We built this nation on hope and dreams.
Say you don’t like how life is going and want things to start moving to moving to a faster pace. Say you care about what happens to this place. We're knee deep in trouble but we should not give up the fight. If we all work together, we will make it through the night.
We will not be vanquished chant the voices of America. Remember we built this nation on hope and dreams.
I know that we have lost several games. But there are many more victories that we have claimed. Come on, let's retake the center stage. Come on, let's turn to a brand-new page.
We will not be vanquished chant the voices of America. Remember we built this nation on hope and dreams.
Sometimes it seems like we will surely know defeat. However, somehow, we will also get back on our feet. We have follow fallen from a high place and gained a lot of scars. But someday America will regain its place among the stars.
We will not be vanquished chant the voice of America. Remember we built this nation on hope and dreams.
We built this nation. We built this nation on hope and dreams. We built this nation. We built this nation on hope and dreams. . We built, we built this nation.
Built this nation.
Built this nation.

Built this nation.
We built, we built this nation.
Built this nation.
Built this nation.

Military[]
The Eastern States are fortunate that a fair amount of important military assets like the Raven Rock Complex and Wright-Patterson Air Force base survived due to the poor quality of Soviet engineering.
Terrorism[]
Terrorism has long been a problem in the Eastern States but it is not as bad it used to be.
One of the Eastern States most infamous terrorist groups is the Ku Klux Klan. They were founded in the wake a centralized group of southern resting the Union victory over the Confederacy. By the 1950's the KKK had degenerated into a group of loosely-afflicted hate groups. Many KKK leaders in the nuclear war survived. One of the surviving KKK chapter leaders, David Duke, took over New Orleans in 1991. He started calling on other surviving Klansman to unite under him and rebuilding the Confederacy. He requested results in satisfying results. By 2001 Duke and the KKK ran empire stretching form Louisiana to southern Georgia and northern Florida. Duke tried expand northward but found resistance in Arkansas and Northern Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia. Duke's second Confederacy was officially a democracy but in truth it was a racist theocratic fascist slave owning dictatorship. The second confederacy tried to expand into Arkansas, South Carolina, Southern Florida, Northern Georgia, Northern Alabama and Northern Mississippi but were unable to conquer them. Texas the herald. The second Confederacy fell in 2007 and was annexed due to a power struggle in the KKK leadership and series of tactical and propaganda mistakes made by the Klan. The KKK has been outlawed by the Eastern States. The KKK has since gone under ground. They make trouble every once in a while but these events have become less and less frequent. The Eastern States offer amnesty for KKK members who volunteer to take re-education classes and report to parole officers for a temporary probation period after graduation.
Another of America's infamous terrorist groups is the Friends of America. The friends was found by former New York billionaire real state tycoon and casino magnate Donald J Trump. He barely managed to escape New York City on a jet plane with his family. They fled to Atlantic City New Jersey where Donald owned several caissons. The destruction of New York City left Donald emotionally scarred and mentally unstable. Donald needed someone to blame for the lost of his home town and decided to blame the entire Slavic race including his Czech wife, Ivana. Shortly after reaching Atlantic City he disowned Ivana and threw her out into the street but kept the children. Donald quickly gained power in Atlantic City and was essentially running the town by 1992. His power was reduced when the Eastern American provisional government became strong enough to gain firm control over Atlantic City in 1996 but he managed to retain a great deal control of the local government of Atlantic City. In 2003, Donald found the Friends of America. He called it a patriotic group standing for American values. The groups critics called it a northern KKK. The friends were now harassing, threatening and assaulting people of Slavic, Chinese, Cuban, and Ethiopian heritage. The friends believe in white Anglo-Saxon protestant supremacy but they show some respect to non-Chinese Asians, non-Ethiopian blacks and non-Cuban Hispanics. Several members of them have been tried for breaking the law but Donald was able to protect the higher-ups. In 2006, Donald Trump won a New Jersey Senate in a highly controversial election. Trump was a fairly unpopular Senator Trump was known for calling his critics closet Communist who wanted to destroy the freedom of America. Trump was also know for holding a mass rant after the black Doug Wilder won the president. Trump's hatred of a back man man winning the presidency led to start planning a coup. The coup was a total failure. The coup led to the friends becoming outlaw. President Wilder offers amnesty for member of the friend who voluntary agree to take reeducation classes. There are a few underground cells of the friends but they are less organized then the KKK. There have been rumors of a possible KKK-Friends of America alliance/merger.
The Eastern States also have a problem with an eco-terrorist group called Back to Nature. Back to Nature blames technology for doom and what mankind needs to revert to primitive pastoralism. They have been known to blow up car lots and burn down factories. The media calls them out as a bunch of hypocrites because they use technology to destroy businesses and accidentally set a few nature destroy forest fires when they try to burn buildings.
There are also a lot of post-World War 3 cults that are involved with terrorism.
Politics[]
The Eastern States is a presidential republic. Its constitution is modeled after the old US Constitution. Unlike the US Constitution the Eastern States Constitution allows sedition if a majority of states in congress approves and if the state and federal government can come to agreeable terms. There are some talk about amending. The two main parties the democrats and republicans. The social democratic Progressive Party is an upcoming third party. Its candidate, former Vermont Governor Bernie Sanders came in second place in the 2016 presidential election. The Progressive Party strongholds are in New England and a former Canadian province though their influence is spreading south. The progressives and democrats hold a coalition in congress.
