Eastland is an island nation situated in the North Sea between Great Britain and Denmark.

History[]

Prehistory (300.000 BC-300 BC)[]

The territory of Eastland was inhabited from prehistoric times, first by Homo Neanderthalensis, After Neanderthal went extinct, the island was populated by Homo sapiens. During neolithic times, the population in the island was so big, being actually the most populous territory of northern Europe. Big megaliths were built by its inhabitants, the mysterious Eurraski people. Little is known about them. Some suggests that they were related to the Basques of northern Spain, but there is unknown. The island remained in stone age until very recently, around 300 BC, when Celtic peoples first arrived carrying iron.

Celtic control (300 BC-604 AD)[]

The Celts first arrived into Eastland around 300 BC. They gave the iron age with them. The native Eurraski were reduced to caves in the northern tip of the island, where they remained until recent times. The Celtic peoples introduced iron, horses and cattle into the island, and they divided into many tribes. There are the myths of king Judoc MacAedhan, a mythical Irish warrior who came to the island and fought against the Eurraski kings for ten years. Then they signed a peace agreement giving the south and western parts of the island to the Celtic peoples, and Judoc became their king. There is also the legend of Lady Morgan, a beautiful Gaelic princess who navigated the seas during a storm of many days until she reached the island, were she found a race of giants who lived in the rocks and the forests. Most of these stories were created later, or modified of oldest ones, in the XIX century, due to a nationalist Celtic reconstructionist and romantic movement.

Which is clearly known is that the Celts lived mainly in the western coast, while the Eurraski lived in the rocky lands of the northeast, sometimes fighting against the Celts, but most times there was intermixing between the two peoples. The Celts founded many kingdoms and used the ancient megaliths as religious centers for their ceremonies.

The Romans knew of the island and they called it "Gallia Septentrionalis" (Northern Gaul), but they never went to the island.

Anglo-Saxon invasion (604-850)[]

Around the VIIth century, Anglo-Saxon sailors from England arrived to the island. According to legends, they were leaded by a man called Aelle, supposedly a nobleman from Northumbria. He led the Anglo-Saxons into the western part of the island and called it Eastland (Because it was east of England) and founded the city of Wulferburg, because there were very much wolves there. His story is told in the Cronica Regnum Stland, written by 12th century monk Karles of Mismath, and it have very anachronisms.

By the way, the Anglo-Saxons populated the western half of the island, displacing the Celts to the east. These Anglo-Saxons were pagan, as well as the Celts. Christianity was introduced around 750 by missionaries from England, but it didn't go too strongly until Xth century. There were churches in Wulferburg, but Norse paganism and druidism was still practiced in the interior.

The Anglo-Saxons installed a kingdom in the island. Aella supposedly was its first king, and he was succeeded by his son Aethelfrid. They ruled the country for two hundred years, until vikings first invaded the island.
