Rafael Edward Cruz (born December 22, 1970) is a Novanglian politician who has been the Leader of the Conservative Party since September 5, 2022, and Member of the Parliament for Villamontes since 2007.
Cruz is a Castilian-Novanglian descended from both Irish and Italians, with his father being originally born in Guantanamo. He graduated from San Salvador University, considered the most prestigious one in the province of Biruvia, to then be elected as MP for Villamontes in 2007. Since then, Cruz has become known for his strongly conservative positions on many economic and social issues, gaining him a sizable base within the Conservative Party.
Despite losing the 2020 election to Diane Morgan, former prime minister Tony Abbott insisted on mantaining his leadership of the Conservative Party, being defeated by Cruz over a wide margin. Since his assumption as leader of the party, Cruz has been highly critical of Morgan's ministry, an approach he is planning to use in his eventual run for Prime Minister in 2025. Along many other Conservatives, he has joined a so-called "movement" with the intention of redeeming the legacy of Prime Minister George McGovern, who is considered one of the most divisive figures in Novanglian history.
