Eelam (Tamil: ஈழம் Īḻam), officially the Republic of Eelam (Tamil: ஈழம் குடியரசு Īḻam Kuṭiyaracu), is a country in South Asia, located in the northern part of the island of Ceylon to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea. Eelam is separated from the Deccan in the Indian sub-continent by the Palk Strait. Eelam shares its only land borders with Sri Lanka that located in the southern part of Ceylon Island. The capital and largest city of Eelam is Jaffna which only about 60 km from the nearest shore of the Deccan.
