The European Union is a political and economic union of 17 member states that spans from Western Europe to the Balkan region. The members cooperate in a number of fields, including politics, culture and economics.
Since the end of the Great War in 1918, European unity had become a very popular idea among unionists, who believed that a unified European state would finally result in world peace. The idea declined in the 1950s and 60s due to the Cold War and the East-West division in Europe, although gained traction again after the collapse of the communist governments in the mid-1970s. In late July 2022, a conference was held in Paris and ultimately resulted in the Paris Agreement being signed on 10 August, forming a united European Union, formally merging the Latin League, Balkan League and the British Isle Community.
