Republican Disc

The following is a list of current factions within the United States Republican Party.

"New Republicans" - The Centrist Wing

President Anderson (1999)

42nd President John B. Anderson

The New Republicans are the dominant faction of the Republican Party who emerged in the 1990s following the collapse of the more staunchly conservative Reagan Republicans and the rise of President John B. Anderson in the 1992 election. New Republicans are in favor of some moderate Social Conservative policies such as the promotion of the family values but also have supported recent social liberal positions such as gay marriage and reducing the gender pay gap. Fiscally, New Republicans are in favor of balancing the budget but also are in favor of increased spending for issues such as Climate Change and the defense budget.

Notable centrist Republicans include former President John B. Anderson, Senator Stephanie MacGriogair, Vice President Pete du Pont, Representatives Bill Kristol and John Delaney, and Governor Larry Hogan.

"Reagan Republicans" - The Conservative Wing

Ronald Reagan

40th President Ronald Reagan

Reagan Republicans are the second largest faction within the Republican Party who are drastically more Conservative and right-wing. Reagan Republicans are in favor of increased military intervention, Social Conservatism, decreased Government spending, and economic deregulation and tax cuts. The most famous Reagan Republican is former President Ronald Reagan, whose failed Presidency is what lead to the fall of the Reagan wing in the mid 1980s.

The last resurgence of the Reagan Republicans would come under the Presidency of Alan Keyes from 2009 to 2013, which many political scientists viewed as a return to the era of Reagan policies, but this in turn alienated many of the New Republicans and led to his defeat in the 2012 elections.

"Liberty Caucus" - The Libertarian Wing

Justin Amash PA

Michigan Senator Justin Amash

The Liberty Caucus is a Congressional caucus that makes up the bulk of the Libertarian Wing of the Republican Party. Libertarians tend to support smaller government, laissez-faire economics, social liberalism, deregulation of government agencies, the right to bear arms, and the preservation of individual liberty as a whole. The Libertarian Wing remains the third largest and influential wing in the Republican party, greatly influencing both the Reagan Republicans and the New Republicans.

Notable Libertarian Republicans include former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, Texas Representative Ron Paul, Tennessee Senator Rand Paul, Michigan Senator Justin Amash.

"Istvan Republicans" - The Technocrat Wing

Istvan Republicans are the Technocratic Wing of the Republican Party. This wing emerged in the late 1990s early 2000s with the rise of big tech companies such as AOL following the massive expansion of the internet and Republican subsidies given towards these internet companies during the dot com bubble burst of 2003.

Despite technocratic friendly Republicans emerging in the early 2000s, Istvan Republicans would not become prominent until the late 2010s with the election of Transhumanist Zoltan Istvan as Governor of California in 2018. Other notable Istvan Republicans include New York Representative Andrew Yang and California Representative Ryan Blevins.

Rockerfeller Republicans were the liberal wing of the Republican Party that was active from the late 1930s until the 1970s. Most Liberal Republicans are unorganized and have no influence in the predominantly Centrist, Center-right party. Liberal Republicans, much like Conservative Democrats, are only Republicans because they live in solidly red districts and have no realistic chance running as Democrats.
