Pre-Doomsday
The Faroe Islands were inhabited sporadically by monks and hermits since the 6th century, but first came under permanent settlement by Norsemen in the 9th century. Until 1400, the islands were under Norwegian control, but after 1400, they would soon become Danish. In 1948 the Danish government granted the Faroese home rule, and in 1973 they used this right to decline to enter the EU with Denmark, due to fishing limits attempting to be imposed. Their was a great debate across this era about whether or not the Faroe Islands should declare independence.
Post-Doomsday
Due to its non-central location and only quasi-independent status, the Faroe Islands were not hit by any nuclear missiles on Doomsday. It was not until several hours after the first strikes that Prime Minister Pauli Ellefsen was awakened and informed that nuclear strikes had occurred.
