Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (August 13, 1926 – November 25, 2016) was the fifth and last Chairman of the Socialist Confederacy, serving from 1970 until the regime's dissolution in 1978. He previously served as Governor of Cuba from 1959 to 1970. Born in Birán, Oriente, the son of a wealthy Spanish farmer, Castro adopted leftist and anti-imperialist ideas while studying law at the University of Havana.
