The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Soviet Union, or USSR) was a socialist state spread throughout Eurasia, and from 1977-1991, in North America. It was the world's only other superpower from 1946-1977. It is comprised of several Soviet Socialist Republics (there are only two federated republics, the Russian SFSR and the Canadian SFSR) across Europe, Asia, and eventually North America. Although communist, it was a totalitarian state during its early days and pre-World War III. With almost 14 time zones and 20 republics at its peak, it was certainly the largest nation in the world at the time. Its largest republic (RSFSR) spans across 19,842,500 kilometers and is the heart of the USSR. Prior to Mikhail Gorbachev becoming the leader of the USSR, there was frequent censorship in the Soviet Union. But Gorbachev argued that technology would render all the attempts to censor media moot as things like the internet were being developed and there were attempts (some successful, some not) to get foreign things over to the USSR.
History[]
The Soviet Union was formed as a political union between several communist states, referred to as Soviet Republics. Russia was the first (and only until 1977) federated Soviet Republic in the USSR, and after all, Russia was the heart of the USSR and the largest Soviet Republic.
World War II[]
During World War II, the USSR invaded Poland along with Nazi Germany. It was expected that the USSR would be allies of the Nazis, but this would change once the Nazis invaded the USSR. After that invasion, the USSR would become a major part of the Allies, and would even go as far as to develop an atomic bomb that would be dropped on Richmond, Virginia, Confederate States of America. The CSA were just as stubborn, if not more than Japan near the end of the war, to the point of it lasting in total for until 1946, where most other theaters of the world had already moved on from the war.
Cold War[]
After World War II, the United States of America and the Soviet Union had the Cold War. It was not a full-scale war, mostly involving proxy wars. During this time, several more communist states would be created, but not incorporated into the USSR, including the People's Republic of China, North Korea, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Cuba, and several others.
Sino-Soviet Split, Rising Political Tensions[]
In 1961, the Soviet Union formally annexed Poland, Czechoslovakia and Mongolia, and would incorporate them as Soviet Republics. This would raise political tensions in East Germany, Yugoslavia, and China. It would also cause China to become a democratic state, and the original Republic of China would rule over the entirety of China once again. Although it also rose tensions between NATO allies and the USA, because they were afraid that they were going to get annexed by the USA as well.
World War III[]
In 1977, the Soviet Union was afraid of the expansion of the Fourth German Reich. They tried to get some of their allies to join them. It turned out that North Korea was with other powers now. They didn't say which. But they weren't with the USSR anymore. The Soviet Union would then invade Alaska and the Canadian SFSR, and incorporate them as Soviet Republics, as they needed to expand in other areas due to fear of being dismantled. This would raise tensions in the United States and Ontario.
Mikhail Gorbachev[]
When Mikhail Gorbachev was elected as leader of the Soviet Union in 1988, he decided that censorship in the Soviet Union would be no more. He made good points about technology making complete control of information impossible, and that Soviets wanted to enjoy newer technology like Americans did.
Soviet Republics[]
The Soviet Union is comprised of Soviet Socialist Republics, or SSRs, two of which are federated.
