Argentina, officially the United Provinces of Argentina, is a republic comprising most of the Southern Cone in South America. It borders Brazil and Peru-Bolivia to the north and has a maritime border with the British territory of South Atlantica via the Falkland Islands.

History[]

Post-independence[]

Argentina is the successor to the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata, a Spanish colony which had spanned most of the Southern Cone, which in turn was the successor to the Captaincy General of Chile.

Independence and expansion[]

Argentina gained its independence as the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata during the Latin American wars of independence. It expanded to gain most of the former viceroyalty's territory, capturing the Intendency of Paraguay and other territories. The Plata attempted to win Upper Peru (now part of modern-day Peru-Bolivia) but failed to do so. The Portuguese later invaded the Banda Oriental, but Argentina took it back in the Cisplatine War after Brazil gained independence.
