Joseon (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮), is a Korean state founded by Taejo Yi Seong-gye in July 1392. It is bordered by the Qing Dynasty to the North and Russia in the extreme North East.

History[]

Korea has been for the most part decent up until the Middle Joseon Era, in which a series of intense power struggles between political factions had weakened the nation. Korea soon suffered an invasion by Toyotomi Hideyoshi from 1592 to 1598, though with the help of the Ming Dynasty, the Japanese invasion war repelled.

However the Japanese invasion had devastated the Korean peninsula. Soon, when the Manchus declared war against the Ming Dynasty, King Gwanghaegun had tried to maintain neutrality. As a result he was later deposed in 1623, and King Injo rose to power. King Injo then supported the Ming Dynasty openly, but in 1624 Yi Gwal decided to launch a rebellion, which was soon suppressed. In 1627, and again in 1636, the Manchus led an invasion of Korea. After the second invasion, King Injo had to end relations with the Ming Dynasty and recognise the Qing.

Korea became a tributary state of the Qing, though had continued to use the Ming reign periods, and also become isolationist and limiting contact with other nations, soon beginning the "Hermit Kingdom" and the 200 years of Korean peace.
