South Australia is a state of Australia, located in the center-south part of the Australian mainland. It shares border with all other Australian mainland states: New South Wales to its east, Queensland to its northeast, the Northern Territory to its north, Western Australia to its west, and the Great Australian Bight to its south. The state was settled by colonists from Great Britain (differently from many other states and territories of Australia, which were penal colonies at the beginning of their history), before becoming an Australian state.

South Australia includes some of the country's most arid landscapes, and most of the population lives in the southern strip of land adjacent to the sea, in the capital (Adelaide) or other minor centres. Despite a history marked by economic hardship, South Australia's economy became prosperous and diversified in more recent times, with driving sectors being agriculture, manufacturing and mining: the state is also known for its excellent wine production.
