The Virgin Islands (Danish: Jomfruøerne), also known as the Danish West Indies (Danish: Dansk Vestindien), are a Danish colony in the Caribbean, consisting of an archipelago of seven main islands (St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke) located at the very eastern end of the Greater Antilles island chain, to the east of Puerto Rico. The western part of the archipelago has been a Danish colony since the 17th century, but the eastern islands were formerly a British possession, annexed by Scandinavia after the Great War.
The islands are mostly flat and low lying, with a few hills on the larger islands. Most of the population lives in the major islands, the most important of which is St. Croix, in which the two main settlements, Frederiksted and Christiansted, are located. The islands' economy is based on fishing, tourism, and agriculture.
