The Dominion of Columbia, commonly known as Columbia, is a sovereign state located in the Pacific Northwest. Originally part of the British Empire, Columbia was established as an independent nation on June 26th, 1979 with the Columbia Act of 1979, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament.
Etymology[]
The name Columbia gains its origins from the Columbia District, the British name for the territory drained by the Columbia River, which itself references Christopher Columbus
The Dominion of Columbia has had a long-standing naming dispute with that of Colombia, which uses a name nearly identical to that of the Dominion's. The issue of Colombia and Columbia sharing similar named has concerned the Columbian government on occasion; they requested in 2004 that the United Nations should consider it an issue. In response, Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez said to the media, "The name of Colombia belongs to us. We will not give up the name."
For several decades there has been internal Columbian debate about changing the name. In 2010, a two-stage binding referendum on a name change took place with voting on the second final stage closing on 19 March. On 11 February 2010, the preliminary results were announced for the first referendum; the name "Cascadia" being the winning name. This name did not win the second referendum; as, according to the results announced on 24 April 2010, the existing name of Columbia was chosen to remain as the Dominion's official name. 56.7% were in favour of retaining the name, while 43.3% were in favour of changing the name to "Cascadia".
