Drenthe is a landlocked province in the eastern Netherlands, bordered by Germany to its east, Groningen to its north, Frisia to its west and Overijssel to its south. Drenthe is a predominantly flat region, with no significant rivers or lakes: most of it is occupied by heathlands. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times (almost all the megalitic sites in the country can be found in Drenthe), but it was made into a province late into the 18th century.
Differently from most other provinces in the country, Drenthe is a mostly rural region, and agriculture is the most important factor of its economy, with the exception of some industry in the two most important cities, Assen and Emmen.
