Punisia is a nation situated on the northern coast of Africa. Punisia has a long history, and has been taken over by many nationalities, including Phoenecians and Punics, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and French. Through that period, the Berber people survived, now still representing a large minority of Libyans. Religions have fluctuated, too. Indigenous Berber beliefs lost ground to the Greek and Roman pantheon, which lost out to Christianity. Then, in the 600s, the Islamic invasions began. Over the next few centuries, it became largely Arabized, with some Berber holdouts. Then, in the 1500s, France gained power and most of the population converted to Catharism or Christianity. Starting from the 1700s, atheism became widespread as well, through contact with metropolitan France. In 1951, the same year as Libya, Punisia gained independece.
The name "Punisia" has an interesting etymology. In the second millennium BCE, a city named "Tunes" was founded by Berbers. This would eventually become the city of Tunis. In the 9th century BCE, the city was taken over by Phoenecians, and until the final Roman invasion, was "Punic", that is, Carthagian, in culture. When the nation gained independence, it decided on the name Punisia to reflect its proud Punic past as well - Punic + Tunisia = Punisia.
