A by-election was held on 1 April 2017 to fill one of Campbell's four seats in the Cygnian Senate vacated by Christian Democrat Bob Day, who resigned on 1 November 2016. The Democratic Labour Party's candidate, Michael Allison, emerged as the victor in the by-election, garnering just more than half of the votes. Senator Allison will be seated on 8 April 2017.
