The Republic of Laughlin, commonly referred to as Laughlin, is an American survivor state in the former US states of Nevada and Arizona.
History[]
Pre-Doomsday[]
Don Laughlin purchased the area that became Laughlin, Nevada in 1964 and it grew into a resort and casino town. Neighboring Bullhead City AZ was first settled in 1864 as the settlement of Hardyville. Laughlin became a popular stop and camping place on Route 66.
Doomsday[]

Neither Laughlin nor Bullhead City was hit on Doomsday, but the largest threat was fallout from strikes on Las Vegas. Luckily, fallout blew east into Utah. EMPs rendered the majority of electronics in Laughlin useless, although electronics have been repaired since then. Refugees began pouring in from Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix. It soon became clear that there would be no contact from Carson City nor Washington DC.
Post-Doomsday[]
The swarm of refugees led Laughlin to have a lack of supplies, also in part because of its desert climate. This triggered a food crisis, where the food grown could not supply the large number of refugees. The crisis went on until 1984, when sufficient farms were finally planted along the Colorado River. Laughlin declared its independence in 1985. Contact has been established with Sierra Nevada (1984) and Slab City (1988). There were talks of merging Laughlin into Sierra Nevada in the early 1990s, but the movement has since been dormant. Don Laughlin, the founder of the original city, still lives in the city-state to this date.
Boulder City Expedition[]
An expedition into Boulder City and attempt to restore and start up the Hoover Dam launched in 1992. Boulder City was found to be deserted and ravaged by firestorms; an airplane flying close to Las Vegas at an altitude of 4000 feet reported that the city had been flattened, and nothing was salvageable. Boulder City was salvaged, and a large project to restore the Hoover Dam commenced in 1993. The Hoover Dam reopened in 2002, giving Laughlin a major, stable power source.
Ever since the Boulder City Expedition, there have been talks of cleaning up, rebuilding, and claiming Boulder City, similar to the cleanup of Buffalo by Niagara Falls. However, radiation from Las Vegas still remains a large problem, although it is at safe enough levels for Hoover Dam workers to live in. Workers and their families currently live in Nueva Las Vegas, a town of about 500. Inhabitants of Nueva Las Vegas never complained about any radiation or felt any effects, giving support to the Boulder City reconstruction plans.
Economy[]
Laughlin is a largely industrial city-state, its economy mainly fueled by exports to neighboring survivor states. Gambling and tourism are still major industries in Laughlin.
Most of Laughlin's power comes from the repaired Hoover Dam, which is operated and owned by the Laughlin Federal Government. Due to the lack of coal in the area and abundance of sunshine, solar power is also used.
Government[]
Laughlin is a constitutional republic that follows a constitution similar to the United States. It elects a president, Congress, and a judicial system.
Politics[]
Laughlin's main political party is the Laughlin Republican Party, derived from ideals of the Republican Party. However, other major parties in the city-state include the Martial Party (militaristic, center-right-wing), Socialist Party (socialist, far-left-wing), and Reconstructive Party (pacifist, center-left-wing).
Education[]
The Laughlin area is served by numerous elementary, middle and high schools throughout the area. There are two main colleges in the survivor state: University of Bullhead City and South Laughlin University.
