He had severed the union of the nations of England, Scotland and Ireland. He had rid the Britons of our flourishing North American colonies. His name? Oliver Cromwell.

The English Civil War was an important part in British history, which not only began a union between the British nations, but also introduced a constitutional monarchy to the isles. The war had resulted in the overthrowing of king Charles I, who was hated for the marriage of a French Catholic princess, abolition of the Parliament, attempt to raise taxes without Parliament request, etc. Oliver Cromwell, a Roundhead, had helped in the assassination of Charles I, and eventually became Lord Protector of the Isles.
Oliver Cromwell has been a controversial figure, considered a regicidal dictator by some and a hero by others. He had even contributed to genocide of Catholics (specifically Scottish and Irish), a so-called “enemy” to Protestant England. Which begs the question: what if Oliver Cromwell had also been xenophobic? What would that mean for the future of the British Isles, and even the world?

Immediate differences[]
- Having crowned himself king (rather than Lord Protector), religious persecution of non-Protestants begins, and sees mass conversion. Many members of the House of Stuart, the previous regime, migrate to the North American colonies, specifically Maryland.
- Having faced persecution and conversion, the kingdoms of Ireland and Scotland fight for and declare independence.
- Cromwell, not supporting the idea of colonial possessions in North America with their religious tolerance and acceptance of the House of Stuart, imposes taxation to help pay off the debt left by the Scottish and Irish. As a result, the New England Confederation, Virginia and Maryland also revolt and declare independence.
- Other European nations, specifically France and the Dutch Republic, are displeased with the persecution of Catholics. As a result, along with Cromwell's xenophobia, the English soon isolate themselves from the majority of Europe and limit trade, similar to Tokugawa Japan. A period of English Isolation begins.
- Without English support in colonialism in the 17th and early 18th century, France, Netherlands, Spain and later Russia have a much easier time colonizing North America, and a greatly reduced British world.
