The National Hockey League (NHL; French: Ligue nationale de hockey—LNH) is a professional ice hockey league currently composed of 30 member clubs. Of the 30 clubs currently playing, 23 are in the United States and seven in Canada. Headquartered in New York City, the NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season.

The National Hockey League was organized on 26 November 1917, in Montreal, Quebec after the suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909 in Renfrew, Ontario. The NHL immediately took the NHA's place as one of the leagues that contested for the Stanley Cup in an annual inter-league competition before a series of league mergers and folds left the NHL as the only league left competing for the Stanley Cup in 1926. At its inception, the NHL had four teams—all in Canada, thus the adjective "National" in the league's name. The league expanded to the United States in 1924, when the Boston Bruins joined, and has since consisted of American and Canadian teams. After a labour-management dispute that led to the cancellation of the entire 2004–05 season, the league resumed play under a new collective agreement that included a salary cap.

The league draws many highly skilled players from all over the world and currently has players from approximately 20 different countries. Canadians have historically constituted the majority of the players in the league, with an increasing percentage of American and European players in recent seasons.

Season structure[]

Since the 1995–96 season, each team in the NHL plays 74 regular season games, 38 each of home and road.

For the 2017–18 season the NHL regular season formula was adjusted to account for the addition of the Vegas Golden Knights. Each team plays either four or five games against the other teams in its division (a total of 26 or 28 games in the Western Conference, 28 games in the Eastern Conference) as well as playing all non-divisional teams in their own conference thrice (21 or 24 games in the west, 24 games in the east). The remaining games of the season are inter-conference play (32 in the west, 30 in the east), allowing every team in the league to play every other team twice. The schedule is structured so that every NHL team plays in every arena at least once per season.

The league schedules two international breaks (one week in November and one week in December) as well as a four-week break in February for the IIHF World Championships and the Winter Olympic Games. The league also schedules a three-day Christmas break (since 1971) when no regular season games are played on either Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Games are not played on December 26 unless it falls on a Saturday, in which case no games would be played on December 23. The NHL also has a holiday roster freeze between 18–27 December, in which in most cases, players cannot be traded, waived, or sent to the minor leagues.
