For centuries, an extension of the neighboring Kingdom of Sweden, Finland was used often as a battlefield between the Swedes and the Russians, often losing territory to one or the other. Ultimately, all of Finland was taken by the Russian Empire, and turned into a Grand Duchy. The Russian Revolution threw Finland into turmoil, and nationalists were able to take advantage of this to declare an independent nation. During the late 1930s and early 1940, Finland was twice invaded by the USSR. This earned them a place at the negotiating table at the end of the war, and granted them a large amount of territory which, in effect, doubled the nations size.
