Finland (Finnish: Suomi), officially the Kingdom of Finland (Finnish: Suomen kuningaskunta), is a Nordic country located in the Fennoscandia region of Northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the west; Karelia to the east; Norway to the north; and the Baltic Corridor to the south. Its capital is located in Helsinki.
During the interregnum from the fall of Nicholas II to the end of the Finnish Civil War in the spring of 1918, Finland's sovereignty was exercised by the Finnish Parliament and, until the October Revolution and the declaration of independence, by the Russian provisional government. After the civil war, the parliament appointed regents (valtionhoitaja) and elected a new king. The man chosen was Frederick Charles of Hesse, who accepted the crown and became Finland's first king. Estonia promptly decided to join a personal union with Finland, as did the short-lived Kingdom of Karelia and the Duchy of Ingria, the latter two being quickly retaken by the Russians, while Estonia was retaken by the Soviet Union during World War II. The union was restored after Estonian independence and the Great Russian War, which saw Karelia and Ingria completely liberated.
