The Flanders (Dutch: Vlaanderen) are a province of the Netherlands, in the southwestern part of the country, bordering Brabant to the east, Zealand and the Atlantic Ocean to the north, France to the west and Belgium to the south. The Flanders have been an economically prosperous region since the Middle Ages, when they were an independent country: afterwards, they've been a part of Belgium for most of their history, before being annexed by the Netherlands during the Great War.
The Flanders are a mostly plain region, crossed by several rivers: they are also the only province of the Netherlands in which Catholicism is the majority religion. Heavily industrialized and urbanized, their economy relies on manufacturing and naval industry, while its cities on the Atlantic are among the most important Dutch ports. The Flanders are also known as the most important beer-producing region of the Netherlands.
