The Nexus: Index > Move??

While this may seem over the top. I'v noticed that many people both on here and on other wikis are becoming increasingly frustrated with Wikia, one of many solutions offered is to move to one of the other wiki sites but many of these don't apeal as they lack the support base wikia has, however one that does is http://www.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page it has a good support base and they are willing to help people move from one wiki host to another, in addition you recive a top level domain name and can (depending on what type of wiki you go for) limit members through an aproval process. I just wanted to get the feel of the comunity on thisVegas adict 16:49, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

Well it finally happened. Wikia has ended the Monaco format. Now I see this wiki in the new look. Not sure though if that is enough for me to suggest we move to a different system. I need more time with the new look. Mitro 15:57, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

I just switched to monobook. Its not as good as Monaco, but far superior to the crap new version. At least it keeps all the options on the left, where user interfaces have been putting their toolbars and options for the last 30 years and theres no real reason to switch now (stupid wikipedia moving the search bar to the right).--Oerwinde 20:20, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

Moving would be drastic and difficult for a large, diffuse community like ours. Transfering all the pages would be a headache... or do they take care of that for you? I'm also not completely aware of proprietary rights and so forth. All material on the Wikia is GNU/CC protected, correct? Deos ShoutWiki have the same license? Benkarnell 20:41, November 3, 2010 (UTC)
I just switched to Monobook too. So much better than 'Wikia's New Look'. It's not worth the effort to change all 11,000+ pages on this site to fit some disagreeable, confusing, and chaotic new style.--Emperor of Trebizond 20:55, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

It's funny, but when I scroll rapidly up and down I actually get disorientated. Mostly because of the repeating background, but also due to the sheer shittyness of the new skin. Downgrading to Monobook it is. >:| --XterrorX 21:08, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

I'm putting up with this skin for now in the hope that Wikia will make it more usable - or even restore Monobook. Though I'm not advocating an entire switchover (yet), I'll be happy to follow the wiki. Fegaxeyl 21:34, November 3, 2010 (UTC)

I proposed moving away from Wikia before, so you can count me in as long as long as there is consensus on the issue. I wouldn't want to risk splitting the community. --Karsten vK (talk) 15:52, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

I think i ought to explain a few things about shout wiki. Were we to move they would import all of the pages with thier history (which is in line with the wikia license). In addition they are planning to introduce the Monaco skin although their not sure weather to charge for Monaco or notVegas adict 17:15, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

So basically it would be monobook with the possibility of paying for monaco? We have monobook here, so why bother moving?Oerwinde 18:02, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Well the staff are nicer and it also has several extensions to monobook we cant get on wikia. Also i would like you to take a look at this http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Anti-Wikia_Alliance Vegas adict 21:38, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

I recommend we wait and see if Wikia bends to public pressure and returns the option of Monobook. It looks like they put A LOT of work into making the new skin the official skin though, so that might make them less likely to change back.

However if they don't, I support a move away from Wikia. The new layout ruins any article with a table, pics or a large map with its compression of available space. Also the change in how section titles are displayed, and that thing under each picture just makes it all ugly to look at. I can't imagine why someone would make all these changes to the original design that ruin the layout. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Red VS Blue 18:08, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Can I direct people to the discussion on the Micronations Wiki on Wikia, and the archive discussions on the subject: the MNW has now partially gone its own way from Wikia. Jackiespeel 22:58, November 28, 2010 (UTC)

Speed

Does anyone notice a speed difference when it comes to the new version and monobook? I just switched to monobook and it just appears faster to me. Mitro 22:05, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, there is a difference. I may add, however, that the new one was faster before vegas put the logo as a repeated background.

Very slow when I use Wikia's new look. It's much better in Monobook. Speaking of which, I hope they don't remove Monobook sometime as well. That would be a little forceful.--Emperor of Trebizond 22:46, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

It will be being removed eventually but for now it will be stayingVegas adict 22:24, November 5, 2010 (UTC)

If they remove Monobook I will be extremely discouraged from even editing on the wiki again. I will be willing to support anything to get at least Monobook, even moving to the 'Shout' site.--Emperor of Trebizond 23:27, November 5, 2010 (UTC)

'Redecorating the house' is one thing - but removing some of the furniture is another (not having 'new page' on the side bar set up, link to main page on the 'green header' one, no access to the bloglist or points leaderboard from either) causes general annoyance.

Probably most people have an initial flurry of activity with a given wiki which then tails off: the changes are likely to encourage the shift. And how many people will start developing their timelines as 'stories and other texts' for websites elsewhere, rather than multiplayer althistories? Jackiespeel 17:38, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

I'm going to give the new skin some time, but seriously editing and viewing pages is horrid with the new skin. Monobook for me. Arstar

So - 'reversing the discussion' what is it that people #do# want with 'whichever layout' is under discussion.

  • 'Standard wiki sidebar layout'
  • More on the sidebar (new page, 'your points' etc - and the rest of what I have said above).

The 'shift to other locations for writings' is an observation/prediction nothing more (g). Jackiespeel 14:39, November 12, 2010 (UTC)

Another thing I have noticed - the 'Weekly Wikia digest of pages changed' - many of the pages don't seem to have changed. Jackiespeel 23:22, November 14, 2010 (UTC)

The problems I'm having with monobook now are pretty serious. No rich text editor, and no activity feed. So its a choice between unusable interface, and severely crippled interface. Way to go Wikia.--Oerwinde 10:44, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

I like the new skin put everyone is entitled to an opinion you can't force people to like it 86.179.253.54 14:22, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

As I said above - it is not the look of the skin that is the issue, but the lack of tools that people require (as variously mentioned above). There will always be some complaints about changes (eg WP's shifting of the search box), and a number of 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' contributors, but the issues here seem to be of a different nature.

Will be intersting to see how the user statistics change. Jackiespeel 15:49, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

You are not alnoe guys, there are a number of wikis that are rebelling/moving. For example, my younger brother is a sonic fan and has informed me that a bunch of there sites are leaving the wikis for the same reason: te skin and no shout (was it search or shout?) box (thats what he told me). I realy dont mind the changes but Im not going to be left out of the reistance!!
