Founded on October 10, 1920, by first president Alexandre Millerand, the Republic managed to successfully rebuild the country and started the modernization of the economy and the army.
Led by a socialist government in the 1930’s, the country signed the Matignon Accords in 1936.
Soon after, the country was engaged in the Allies during World War II.
The country was victorious but needed reforms.
A more social republic was proclaimed in 1949, but it was flawed by governmental instability.
Finally, Charles de Gaulle resumed power in 1952, and proclaimed a new Constitution in 1959, giving more powers to the President.
The president is elected by universal suffrage since 1962.
The 80’s saw a brief socialist rule under President François Mitterrand, but he lost the 1988 elections in favor of Jacques Chirac.
President Chirac ruled the country until 2002.
The 2000’s and 2010’s saw a liberalization of the country.
The current socialist President, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, elected in 2022, called for constitutional reforms.
A Constituent Assembly was elected in December 2022. The project of a parliamentary republic more social and giving more powers to the citizens is currently discussed.
A new flag, reflecting those changes, has been proposed by the Assembly in February 2023.
