France (French: [fʁɑ̃s] ), officially the French Republic (French: République française), is a country located primarily in Western Europe. It also includes regions and territories in Africa, the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, giving it one of the largest discontinuous exclusive economic zones in the world. Territories outside the metropolitan area include French Africa in Africa, Saint Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic, French India in India, the French West Indies, and many islands in Oceania and the Indian Ocean. Metropolitan France, which includes mainland France in Europe, borders the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Andorra, and Spain, while the territories border 14 other nations, making it the highest number of countries that a nation borders, at 20 nations.

In total France spans a combined area of 6,098,956 km2 (2,354,820 sq mi), the second largest in Europe (just behind the USSR), and the sixth largest country in the world, and has a total population of over 150 million, the second largest in Europe, and the ninth largest in the world. France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre; other major urban areas include Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Bonn, Antwerp, Brussels, Algiers, and Dakar.
