France, officially the Kingdom of France (French: Royaume de France), is a country located primarily in Western Europe. Its metropolitan area shares borders with the Basque Country and Aragon to the south, Italy to the southeast, Switzerland and Burgundy to the east, the English Channel to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It also includes overseas regions and territories in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. France is a unitary constitutional monarchy with is capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre.

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, France was dominated by a series of religious civil wars which confirmed the prevalence of the influence from Huguenots in the country. Following decades of social distress, in 1763 the Estates General turned into a legislative assembly, limiting the power of the monarch, thus converting the country into a constitutional monarchy. During the Italian Revolution, France would support the revolutionaries, eventually becoming an ally of Napoleon in the early stages of the Napoleonic Wars. Throughout the 19th century, France's political power in Europe would decline with the formation of Italy and Germany. In World War I was allied with Germany, and during World War II was one of the main powers of the Front until switching sides. During the Cold War, it supported the United Commonwealth, being the center of the Missile Crisis.
