Frederick Charles I (Fredrich Karl Ludwig Konstantin Prinz und Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel; 1 May 1868 – 28 May 1940), was the first King of independent Finland.
After the Finnish Civil War, the Finnish Government elected Frederick Charles (under the heavy influence of Germany) to the newly created Finnish Throne. The New King was given Helsinki Palace as a royal residence. Unlike customs of the day, Prince Wolfgang, Frederik Kaarle’s second son, was named as the heir to the throne, rather than his first son Phillip.
