Fremont is the capital and largest city in the US state of Cheyenne and the seat of Laramie County. As of the 1997 preliminary census, the population of Fremont was roughly 55,000 (metro 93,000), nearly one-fifth of the entire state's population. The city was founded in July 1867, in what was then part of the Dakota Territory; almost concurrently, the city experienced its' first major growth spurt that November, with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad. The city is named for American explorer and California senator John C. Frémont (1813-1890).
