French Algeria refers to the 5 French Overseas Departments in the region of Algeria. The territory was founded in 1830 as the French began their colonization of North Africa and has since gained partial autonomy after the failed Algerian Revolution which lasted from November of 1954 to June of 1961. French Algeria is also in the European Union despite not being on the continent due to its status within France.
