The French Empire (French: L'Empire Francais) is a country in Europe, generally regarded as one of the world's superpowers which has dominated Europe and much of world affairs politically, militarily and economically since the mid-1810s. Based in France proper, the term "French Empire" refers both to the nation itself, headed by a constitutionally empowered monarch, as well as its pre-2013 overseas colonies and protectorates as well as the now-defunct Versailles Pact and Council of Industrial Countries, both of which tied much of Europe military and economically (respectively) to Parisian decisions. With only limited interruptions, this status quo remained in place for most of two hundred years, earning the name Pax Francia. For the second half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st, France engaged in a geopolitical contest with the United States for supremacy - this is known as the Cold War.

In the mid-2010s, after a decade of economic and political malaise, the French Empire suddenly began a collapse and is now a runt-state, still with a hereditary monarchy, based in historical France, having shed all of its overseas holdings and seeing the wholesale evisceration of its carefully-constructed network of alliances. The sudden dissolution of the French Empire has created one of the most chaotic global security environments in world history in the 2010s.
