The French State was a military dictatorship established in the aftermath of World War I and the Communard Uprising which knocked France out of the war. In the beginning, the French State was limited to the remnants of a navy on life support from the British. However, using their colonies as a springboard, the French State was able to recapture Paris with British and German help and drove the Communards into the mountains. After the defeat of the socialists, most powers withdrew their support of France and the country struggled on its own, still fighing a socialist guerrilla insurgency by the Communards until the 30s.Petain's primary concern was order and so he used nationalism as a tool, but it was this very nationalism that overthrew him as many still wished for a French Alsace-Lorraine. The Far Right Leagues unified with the help of Francois de la Rocque and Charles De Gaulle and managed to infiltrate the military structure of the government. In 1934, a series of riots in the major cities, known as the Rightist Uprisings, lead to de la Rocque seizing power with the help of De Gaulle and unifying the Far Right to form the National League. Petain would be executed as a German collaborator and a wave of nationalism and militarism would sweep over the new French Kingdom.
