History[]
The Republic of Genoa was founded in 1096, following the foundation of comuni.
It was conquered by Napoleon in 1795 and renamed Ligurian Republic, then annexed by France in 1805. In 1814, it was re-established, only to be incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1861, it was re-founded, but with a different government (a hereditary constitutional monarchy led by the Doria family, rather than the Venice-wise oligarchic republic).
