Prince George, Duke of Kent (20 December 1902 – 17 July 1982) was a member of the British royal family, the fourth son of King George V and a younger brother of kings Edward VIII and George VI. He served in the British military in the interwar years and at the start of the Second World War and as the Governor-General of Australia from 1945 to 1948.
Biography[]
Prince George was born at York Cottage in Norfolk as the fourth son of later King George V. After his studies, he joined the Royal Navy before serving in civil service. Initially supposed to succeed Alexander Hore-Ruthven as Governor-General of Australia in 1939, his appointment was delayed because of the Second World War. He returned to active service in the Royal Air Force, but was recalled following the death of his brother Henry in France. He nevertheless continued to work in the military back in the United Kingdom. After the war, he finally became the Governor-General of Australia in 1945. In 1946, he appointed Ben Chifley, the leader of the Australian Labor Party, as Prime Minister of Australia. In 1948, he was unexpectedly recalled to the United Kingdom and made Counsellor of State.
