George IV (born George Andrew Romanov; August 5, 1861-February 11, 1944) also known by his Russified name Georgiy Ivanovich Romanov was the King of America from 2 December 1875 until his death in 1944. He was the longest monarch in American History, reigning for 68 years, and the fifth-longest reigning monarch in the World

Biography[]

Early life[]

George Andrew Romanov was born on August 5, 1861 in Washington Castle, New York and was baptized 6 days later. Born during the reign of his mother, his father Grand Duke Ivan Mikhailovich of Russia, was a great-grandson of Paul I of Russia. His mother, Evangeline I, was the only surviving child of George III and Martha Clarkson Jay, his great-great-grandfather was John Jay, who was the Duke of Virginia and the 2nd Prime Minister of the United States. Prime Minister Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, were listed as George IV's godparents. He was taught by his father, Ivan, to speak Russian.

Young George was calm and pretty timid and has been described by his paternal grandfather as a "a little deer who gets scared of almost everything but doesn't want to scream", His timidity later disappeared when he got older.

Reign (1875-1944)[]

George assumed the throne at 14 years old. With his half sister, Grand Duchess Anna Ivanova of Russia as his regent. until his 24th birthday, when he assumed full powers.

At 32 years old, George married Maria, Princess of Hesse-Kassel, his second cousin, who's also his third cousin. She was the daughter of William, Prince of Hesse-Kassel (1844-1926) and Grand Duchess Alexandra Alexandrova of Russia (1842-1944). Her parents were also first cousins.

  • George V (1893-1974) married Agnes Wilson Bettencourt (1915-2001), daughter of John Louis Bettencourt, 2nd Baron of Bettencourt
  • Mildred, Duchess of Brittany (1894-1983) married Frañsez XIV of Brittany (1875-1943)
  • Joseph of America (1895-1965) married Olga Nikolaevna of Russia (1895-1980), his third cousin
  • Augustine of America (1896-1899), died young
  • Augustine of America (1898-1898), stillborn
  • Hannah of America (1899-1969) never married and died childless

Legacy[]

George IV has been regarded as the most influential monarch in America because he was credited with advancing women's rights in the United States.
