Early Life[]

Birth and Christening[]

James was born at 21:30 (GMT) on 26 April 1924, during the reign of his paternal grandfather, King George V. His father, the Prince of Wales (later King George VI), was the second but eldest living son of the King, so the heir apparent. His mother, the Princess of Wales (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother), was the youngest daughter of Scottish aristocrat the Duke of Forfar. It’s his parents wedding anniversary. Unlike his siblings, he was delivered naturally at The official Residence of his parents, Royal Lodge at Windsor Great Park, Windsor, near Windsor Castle, his paternal grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, went to visit him the next day. He is the eldest son and first child of The Prince and Princess of Wales. He has a younger brother Arthur and two younger sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, whose births were behind him 5 days ahead of his second birthday and six years. The Home Secretary, Arthur Henderson, was present to verify the birth.

41-gun salutes has fired around the country, bells of Westminster Abbey and other churches has rung the other day to signal his birth. Other Places around The Empire at that time did the same.

He was baptised by the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Thomas Davidson, in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on 26 May, his grandmother’s 59th birthday. He was named James, as he was half Scottish, also naming him James showed as another action for the King to cut ties with his German Connection after 1917 changing the Royal Family and House name to Windsor, as King James United Scotland and England also with Ireland made Great Britain; Albert after his father; George after his grandfather; Edward after great-grandfather; and Alexander as his great-grandmother Queen Alexandra’s masculine form and his great-uncle, The Earl of Athlone.

His godparents were: Queen Alexandra, King George V and Queen Mary; Princess Mary, Countess of Dalkeith; Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; Prince John, Duke of Clarence; Countess Strathmore; Lady Elphinstone; Lord Glamis ; The Queen of Norway (his paternal great-aunt) and The Crown Princess of Sardinia (his paternal cousin)

James was the first male-line grandchild of The King, first male-line great-grandchild of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, he was seen as the hope and fresh air to the family and secure the continuity of the monarchy and expected to be King.

James was the first member of the Royal Family to be born with surname Windsor, so he was nicknamed”The First Windsor”. However, he chose to use “James Wales” when he was at school.

James was the first Prince born to The House of Windsor and first Prince born for almost twenty years, his birth generated a huge public interest and people gathered outside Windsor Great Park to have a look at him.

Early Years[]

James was cherished and dotted by the King, He even raised the spirit of Queen Alexandra, James was a cute child and loved by his uncles and aunt, he was closed to his two cousins, William and Richard, before his siblings were born. It was reported that James was Queen Alexandra, George V and Queen Mary’s favourite great-grandchildren and grandchildren. He and Arthur were also Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, Princess Helena, Princess Louise, Princess Beatrice, Princess Helena Victoria, Princess Marie Louise, Prince Alexander John, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, Princess Josephine Caroline, Duchess of Kent and Strathearn, Princess Alice’s favourite royal children, they called him ”Darling Jamie” and his brother “Darling Artie”. James and Arthur knew many Family secrets, so they were called by their uncles and aunts as “Little Secrets-keepers”.

James was called "Jamie" by his close family, based on what Queen Mary called him at first, he was cherished by his grandfather George V, and during his serious illness in 1929 his regular visits with his siblings were credited in the popular press and by later biographers with raising The King’s spirits and aiding his recovery.

James was expected to become King, under the order of his grandfather King George V, he received the training and education as future King since childhood.

James and Arthur were the only male-line descendants of King George V and his heirs for a long time. As destined “heir and spare”, The Parliament, Courtiers and Privy Council suggested that they should received education of Constitution when they reached age seven. Although their parents strongly rejected that as they want them to have normal life before reaching age of 18, they received it with The King and Queen’s approval and support. Thus they received the education from the King, Duke of Norfolk, Vice-Provost of Eton, Archbishop of Canterbury and courtiers, even Winston Churchill was their lecturer for a brief of time. Also, Queen Alexandra, King George V and Queen Mary and his grand aunts and uncles started to teach him how to be a good monarch like his great-great grandmother Queen Victoria, as James’ future has been destined since his birth. As a result, he has been called”The Last Victorian Royal” by the press when he become King. He was nicknamed “The Perfect Firstborn whom The Royal Family and the country has expected for centuries.”by Royal Biographers.

Also, when they received their education, they were examined and tested by their tutors and reported to The King, The King’s Private Secretary, Lord Hardinge wrote in his diary:”The two Princes are at any means better Princes than their uncles. Prince James has all the characteristics that would make him a great King, a great Monarch followed our late Queen Victoria. He is by any means, our hope and that future we looked for. Prince Arthur is a far better ‘Spare’, if I may say so, he knows well about his position and destiny, and he would be a great support for Prince James. Having such two Princes is a great asset of The Monarchy and I am optimistic about the future of us, they would secure The Monarchy for at least a century after. They are truly blessed by God and God Save The King by any means.”

James and Arthur has been granted Knight Grand Cross of The Royal Victorian Order after they become champion of European Competition. James is now the only living Knights of the Royal Victorian Order that was created by George V.

In Court Circular of George V’s Reign, James and Arthur’s order of precedence were above their uncles, but in official precedence, they were still behind The Duke of Clarence.

European Champion[]

As a child, James was well trained by the tutors of Fencing, Horseriding, Dancing, Playing The Piano and violin, he was extremely well in fencing, so he was sent to many National competition and eventually gained The tickets to The European Champion.

Fencing[]

James was a successful fencer, he participated in 1948 London Olympic and became the first Olympic multi medalist of The Royal Family for participating in all three types of Fencing:Epee, Foil and Sabre.

The 1924 Squad[]

1924 was a year with Royal Babies.

The 1924 squad members and 1926 squad members were all picked by King George V that would be a consultant and think tank of James, King George V turns out to be visionary.

All the members went to Eton, Sandhurst and The War together with James and Arthur, formed a special bond of them.

The 1924 and 1926 squad members were possible future husbands of The whole Royal Family, George V’s descendants and his brother’s descendants all married those members.

James is the only living member of The 1924 and 1926 Squad and he is the godfather of squad member’s children.

James is the first monarch to have a bachelor degree by actually finished University. He studied at Ludgrove School with his cousin, Lord Richard Montagu-Douglas-Scott, later the Duke of Buccleuch. After graduated, they entered Eton College which James graduated in a remarkable academic result within four years. Direct Heir and Heir Apparent[]

During his grandfather's reign, when he was born, James was second in the line of succession to the British throne, behind his father. His birth generated great public interest, and celebrated by the whole country, as he was expected to become king one day, thus he was the direct heir of King George V when he was born. When his grandfather died 1936 and James' father became king, and he became heir apparent automatically as he is the eldest son, he was called The Duke of Cornwall, the title received by the sovereign’s eldest son automatically before he became Prince of Wales.

Direct Heir[]

James’ father, The Prince of Wales was first in line to the throne when he was born, making James second in line to the throne and direct heir, King George V and Queen Mary, The Royal Household, The Parliament and The Church were delighted a Prince was born to The Prince and Princess of Wales. They began to focus more on him and King George V has already made a full plan for him to become a well-prepared monarch not long after he was born, including his education. He received more heavier education of Constitution since he became heir apparent, in order to prepare him for The Crown. He attended his first solo official engagements when he was 16.

His father’s stammer has been a concern of the people, James and his brother Arthur, the ‘Heir and Spare’, gaining the popularity from the people as “The Wales Boys”.

James started to attend engagements with his grandparents, parents and other Royals when he was a child. He was charismatic and charming, fully replaced his uncle. James and his brother Arthur, alongside their sisters Elizabeth and Margaret, were the saviour of The Monarchy after the Great War, the WWI Veterans and The Armed Forces supported the Waleses from the first day due to The Prince of Wales’ heroic behaviour in the Great War.

James and Arthur’s previous education when they were still minor started to gain their result. The Critics of The Times and Telegraph are all delighted when they started to notice the two Princes when they grew much older. They were the future of The Monarchy, and as future King, people are all optimistic about James and believe he would be a great King.

George V has left a plan and Queen Mary sent eleven years old Prince James, the heir, to Wales and learn Welsh for a full academic year, thus James become the first Prince of Wales that knew Welsh in the future. When James finished his academic year in Wales and waved goodbye to Welsh in fluent Welsh, Welsh people fell for James and James become the saviour to The Monarchy.

George V has famously said James was “not only my Pride, but the Nation’s Pride, The Empire’s Pride.”

James automatically become Duke of Cornwall the moment his grandfather passed away and his father ascended to the throne.

The eleventh years old and nine years old Princes walked behind their father has strongly touched British people’s heart, especially they performed their duties perfectly.

James led his brother Arthur and his two cousins, Edmund Windsor and Charles Windsor, performed the Grandchildren’ Vigil for the first time in history in front of the whole country, the photo of him standing under The Crown, Orb and Sceptre has been headlines the next day and the headlines called him ”The Duke of Cornwall.”

James was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 26 April 1936, in his 12th birthday, and one of the celebration engagements of his parents coronation. Though his official investiture was not held until a year after, when he was crowned by his father in a televised ceremony held at Caernarfon Castle.

At his parents’ coronation, at Westminster Abbey, he preceded all his brother and uncles in the seats, and his seats was the Prince of Wales seats organized by the Duke of Norfolk. When his father was crowned by St. Edward’s Crown, he wore the coronet of Prince of Wales, which was used again later at his investiture. The Coronet was based of his grandfather’s Coronet. Also the Labour government by then invited him to Cabinet Meetings and witnessed Parliamentary meetings, he was the first to do so and when Winston Churchill back into Power in 1950, he invited James to the cabinet meetings and The Conservatives has taught him in the process. Having these two experience, when he becomes King, it is unable to guess which Party is his favourite.

At 1949 and 1950, The Labour Government and Conservative Government both invited James to attend Cabinet meetings and watch The House of Commons Meeting, it was the will of King George V.

In 1951, The King has undergone an operation, he has established an Regency under Regency Act 1937 declared by his Physician. The United Kingdom and The King’s Dominions immediately declared James as Prince Regent. As Prince Regent, James stood on behalf of his father at Trooping the Colour, inspected the King’s troops, State opening of Parliament, took on more duties for his father like the overseas travel that was planned for his father. He has travelled to Canada, Greece, Italy and Malta with The Princess of Wales. Eight months before he actually reigned as King, his reign has actually began and this has caused historian discuss whether to count his regency as his reigning days. If so, his reign would have surpassed Louis XIV in 2022.

James has become the most popular and most favourite Prince of Wales of all time, He is “The Pride” of King George VI’s “My Pride and Joy, Elegance and Sweetness.”

Under the management of James, The Duchy of Cornwall became profitable and left great amount of money for his son George when George took over management.

In The United States, as James was “The Greatest Generation” in American definition of the generation who took part in WWII, and he was the only remaining Head of State of that Generation, so he was nicknamed by The American Press as “The Last of The Greatest Generation” and had a huge fanbase from The US. Marriage and fatherhood[]

James married his long term girlfriend, Lady Penelope Herbert, the daughter of 6th Earl of Carnarvon and sister of his close friend Porchey, he proposed to her after the welcoming ceremony held for him and his brother and they were engaged.

Some Politicians and Deans has concerned the marriage as Penelope’s parents were divorced, they thought she was not fit for the future King and should not be the wife of the future Head of Church of England and Queen. James intended he would marry no one should he not allow to marry Penelope, also he has euphemistically expressed that he and Penelope already ‘had a close relationship physically during War Time on leave’, meaning that Penelope, as a spinster, could not marry any men in the country as per tradition. At last, Queen Mary said that she would support their marriage and Penelope’s parents did not affect them, she believed that they would act as a model of family. That was a fatal decision to clear all of their obstacles to be married.

They married on 7 July 1946 at Westminster Abbey, a large group of guests, including Heads of states,Generals around the world were invited and it was name”Royal Event of The Year”by The Times magazine.

They spent honeymoon at Wales, Isles of Wright and Malta, The Queen’s former Lady-in-waiting later described it as “a sweet vacation with a lot of kisses, they had a lot of passionate nights during the honeymoon and The Queen was expecting very soon”.

Marriage Life[]

King George VI granted them Clarence House as their official home, their first two children were born there. Also he granted them Birkhall. James has own residences as Duke of Cornwall under Duchy of Cornwall, also, his official residence in Wales, Llwynywermod.

After the war, in 1947, When the whole family left for overseas tour to South Africa, The Prince of Wales undertook most of his father’s engagements let his father have time to rest. His wife,The Princess of Wales stayed in the country as she was expecting their first child. He went on Trooping the Colour with his father thereafter. During the trip, as The King and the first four people in the line of succession were not in the country, the parliament made a plan that if any incident happened, The Princess of Wales’s child whom she was expecting, would succeed to the throne after he/she was born. No incident have happened so the plan never used. This plan was disclosed 50 years later, in 1997.

Affected by American culture when James was at war, James expressed his love of Penelope including the legendary Buckingham Palace balcony kissing after the wedding, this become a tradition to the royal couples after them. James never have gossip with other woman and he is a great husband and father said by The Queen, his children in the documentary filmed when he turned 90. In recent disclosed film reels, James was seen kissing Penelope on board HMY Britannia.James broke the long tradition of Royal Family tradition and became the first Royal Men to exchange wedding rings with his wife and wear wedding ring on his left ring finger and since then, all the Royal Men followed this tradition, including his brother. James also wore Signet Ring on his little finger.

Jacqueline Kennedy, the former First lady of The United States wrote on her diaries to prove that James is a loyal husband to his wife and loved his family very much. She wrote “The British King George is a handsome, charismatic and interesting man, I’ve tried to flirt with him during our State Visit to them and their State Visit to us. He simply ignores me both times, I knew he could understand my flirt, he just didn’t care, he only had his wife The Queen and his children in his eyes. The next morning, I could see clearly many hickeys on The Queen’s neck, covered by talcum powder, and The Queen has clearly been “moisturized greatly”by her husband last night, it’s like a quiet response to my flirt. The Queen is a confident woman surrounded by happiness , it was obviously brought by her husband.”

“The next time they visited us, I’ve seen them kissing passionately in the corridor and the way King George looked at his wife, shows how he loved her deeply, I knew they had a passionate night as I have seen them got back to the room in a hurry. I saw the room was in a mess the next morning and The Queen has hickeys on her neck, even though she had covered it with talcum powder. It clearly shows how wild they were last night. The Queen really had a reason to be confident as she was still attractive to her husband when she was already in her 40s and had four children.”
