Georgia, officially the Bagrationi Kingdom of Georgia, is a sovereign state in the Caucasus mountains. It is bordered by Armenia to the south, West Persia to the southwest, Russia to the north, and Azerbaijan to the east. Its surface area of almost 70,000 square kilometers makes it the 34th-largest country in Asia and the 114th-largest in the world. With a population of over 4,373,078 inhabitants, it is the 37th-most populous country in Asia and the 99th in the world.
History[]
The Bagrationi dynasty was founded in the late 8th century and later ruled the medieval Kingdom of Georgia. The dynasty left a long legacy on Georgia for the years to come. In the 19th century, Imperial Russian troops steamrolled through Georgia and annexed it into the Russian Empire. Under Imperial Russia, Russification became stronger, which merged both Georgian and Russian languages.
In the 20th Century, after the Russian Empire fell and the Romanovs were banished, Georgia became independent as a Marxism-Bernsteinist (Menshevik) Republic under the leadership of President Nikolay Chkheidze. The Democratic Republic of Georgia only lasted 2 years before the newly-established Soviet Union annexed the nation.
Under Soviet rule life was tough for the Georgians. Although under Stalinist rule it was taken care of due to Stalin's Georgian blood, Georgia suffered many economic disasters which impoverished the Soviet Republic.
In 1982, Georgia became independent after seceding from the Soviet Union. Originally, the short-lived Republic was a provisional government, in which it was either going to merge with the newly formed Russian Federation, or break up into multiple states. Instead of joining the Russian Federation, a referendum was held on which government would rule Georgia. Due to the lasting monarchist sentiment in Georgia, with a majority of 67%, the Bagrationi monarchy was restored to power. Although many preferred a constitutional form of monarchy, the first 20 years were under an absolute monarchy, until the people revolted in a West Persian-styled revolution. The so-called Lion Revolution overthrew the absolute autocracy and formed more decentralized constitutional monarchy.
Today, Georgia is a well-off nation in the Caucasus with a good economy. Although border disputes are still happening, along with minor border skirmishes with the self proclaimed republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, relations with its neighbors are pretty good.
Demographics[]
General[]
In 2020 it was estimated that Georgia had a fertility rate of 2.15, a slight increase compared to what it had in 2002 (2.02) and lower than in 1988 (2.5). That same year the age demographic was:
- <14 - 24.3%
- 15-65 - 66.2%
- >65 - 9.5%
The urbanisation in 2020 was at around 55%. Around 1.2 milion people (or 26% of the population) lived in the capital of Tbilisi.
Ever since the fall of communism and wars with Abkhazia, South Ossetia, the Civil war Georgia has struggled with population loss, with the population reaching peak in 1990 with 5,503,742 people. In 2013 it reached it's lowest point with only 4,152,000 and the population started rising again thanks to natural increase and increase in life standard and economy.
