The German Empire was a major player throughout the 19th century and the very early 20th century and became somewhat of a superpower throughout much of the remaining 20th century. It was virtually the head of the Central Powers during the Great War and thereafter until the Vienna Announcement in which the alliance was officially dissolved and split between the Imperial Alliance, Arabian Defense League, Plovdiv Accord, and the Central European Coalition.
