The constitution of Germany was ratified on October 1, 1950.

The country liberalized and developed in the 50's and 60's.

The current constitution, proclaimed in 1969, allowed the election of president in universal suffrage.

The following years saw the rise of the country as a modern power.

The first chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who remained in office until 1963, worked for a full alignment with the NATO rather than neutrality, and secured membership in the military alliance. Adenauer was also a proponent of agreements that developed into the present-day European Union. When the G6 was established in 1975, there was no serious debate as to whether Germany would become a member.

Germany is now a great power with a strong economy; it has the largest economy in Europe, the world's fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest by PPP.

As a global power in industrial, scientific, and technological sectors, it is both the world's third-largest exporter and importer. As a highly developed country, which ranks ninth on the Human Development Index, it offers social security and a universal health care system, environmental protections, and a tuition-free university education.

Germany is a member of the United Nations, the Western European Union, NATO, the Council of Europe, the G7, the G20 and the OECD. It has the third-greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The current President is Olaf Scholz since 2019.
