The northern areas of Germany were occupied primarily by British and American forces at the end of the Second World War. When the time was believed to be appropriate to re-constitute the German nation, talks with the French and Poles (who occupied the southern part of Germany as well as Austria) resulted in a partition of the nation along an east-west axis. The northern nation retained the name of "Germany". Today, the nation is one of the leading industrial countries in Europe, and is a member of NATO.
