Gibraltar is a colony of Great Britain consisting of the promontory (the Rock of Gibraltar) at the very southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula: it shares a land border with Spain to its north. The United Kingdom acquired this territory after the War of the Spanish Succession: it was occupied by Spanish and Italian troops during the Great War, mostly thanks to skillful diplomatic maneuvering done by the Commonwealth during the peace treaty. It is the only British territory in all Europe outside of the British Isles.
Gibraltar is a small territory, dominated by the Rock and densely urbanized at its feet: it has been sanctioned by international treaties that its port cannot host warships, but it still is a quite important commercial port, thanks to its position at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea. English is the official language of Gibraltar, but Llanito, a creole language influenced by Spanish and Arabic, is also widely spoken.
