Gibraltar, officially known as the Gibraltar Special Autonomous Region of the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Región Autónoma Especial de Gibraltar del Reino de España), is a special autonomous region of Spain located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.

Gibraltar became a colony of the British Empire in 1704, when Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. The colony was further expanded when Britain obtained a seven year lease of the Campo de Gibraltar from the Second Spanish Republic in 1936, shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The entire territory was transferred to Spain in 2006. As a special autonomous region, Gibraltar maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland Spain under a principle of "one country, two systems".
