The governor-general of Vietnam was the representative of the British monarch, the last being King Charles III, in the Commonwealth of Vietnam. The governor-general is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of government ministers; however, it has become customary due to the country's unique history that the governor-general is the Duke of Hue, a title created by King George VI in 1945 for Bảo Đại, former Emperor of Vietnam. Following his death in 1997, his son, Bảo Long, 2nd Duke of Hue, served as the Governor-General until the abolishment of the monarchy in 2023.

The governor-general was formally the commander-in-chief of the Vietnamese Defense Force; however, the actual power lied within the National Security Council headed by the Prime Minister of Vietnam. The functions of the governor-general included appointing ministers, judges, and ambassadors; giving royal assent to legislation passed by parliament; issuing writs for election; and bestowing Vietnamese honours. However, his duties were mostly ceremonial and he must act on the advice of the Cabinet.

In general, the governor-general observed the conventions of the Westminster system and responsible government, maintaining a political neutrality, and had always acted only on the advice of the prime minister or other ministers or, in certain cases, parliament. The governor-general also travelled throughout Vietnam to open conferences, attended services and commemorations, and generally provided encouragement to individuals and groups who are contributing to their communities.

Following the abolishment of the monarchy in April 2023, the post Governor-General was abolished, and its functions, office, and other properties was transferred to the newly-created Office of the President. In July 2023, as a gesture of national unity and reconciliation, Prime Minister Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân advised the President to create the post of Presidential Envoy for National Heritage and Bảo Long was appointed to the position.
