Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a Republic in Southern Europe. It borders Albania, Bulgaria and the Cyprus (Northern Cyprus), and shares maritime borders with Turkey.

The modern Greek State was created in 1830, after the Greek War of Independence. In 1916, the National Schism divided Greece between the pro-allied Venizelos and the pro-German King Constantine. The resulting Pro-Allied Government then entered World War I. The victory of the Central Powers in 1918 destroyed Venizelos’ government, and put King Constantine back on the throne as a result of the Sofia Treaty. The Royalist Georgios Streit was placed as prime minister and served until 1936, when he was replaced by Ioannis Metaxas, who went on to create a authoritarian, extremely conservative regime.

Greece annexed the Southern Half of Cyprus in 1960, after the British colonial administration allowed a referendum on Cyprus’ future, and whether Cyprus should become independent, remain under British rule, or join Greece (Enosis). The majority of Greek Cypriots voted for Enosis, and effectively all of the Turkish Cypriot population voted against Greek Annexation. During the transition, the Turkish in the North declared the Republic of Cyprus, which was backed by Turkey and the Berlin Pact. The resulting Cyprus Crisis became a period of tension between NATO and the Berlin Pact, who both controlled the largest number of Nuclear Weapons. A LUN-backed peace deal ended the crisis by annexing the Greek-Majority South to Greece, and creating a Turkish-backed Republic to the north.
