Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat) is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America, located in the Northern Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Originally a colony of Denmark, the territory was purchased by the United States in 1947 (orchestrated by Secretary of State James F. Byrnes). Due to its strategic importance during the early years of the Cold War, military development of the territory spanned throughout the 1950s. Recently the territory has been active in its mineral wealth.
Greenland has a population of over 100,000 people. The territory is dominated by those born in the Contiguous United States and also Denmark. The remainder of the population is dominated by the native Inuits.
