The Commonwealth of Greenland ("Kunngeqarfik Kalaallit Nunaat"), or simply Greenland, is a country localized in North America, in the world's largest island, between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Greenland shares maritime borders with Iceland to the east, the Vesperian Arctic Archipelago to the west, and Newfoundland to the south. It is the only country in the Americas to have an Indigenous language as the sole main language (although Danish and English are recognised as regional languages). It is the eighth-largest country by area, but the eighth least-populated country, thus having the least densely populated region in the world.

The lands of Greenland had been inhabitated and settled by the Inuit people in the last 4,500 years. In the beginning of the 10th century, Norsemen reached the region and settled in the southern parts of the island becoming part of the Norwegian crown in 1261. Following the disappearance of Norse colonies in the late 15th century, Danish explorers, under the Denmark-Norway Union, reached the island again, affirming sovereignty. Due to Norway's weak status, it lost sovereignty over Greenland in 1814 when the union was dissolved. With the Constitution of 1953, Denmark granted home rule to the Greenlanders, which in 1979 voted in favor of the independence of Greenland.

With the independence of Greenland, the country became influenced by North American nations to join the Pan American League and distance itself from Europe. The process of Greenland distancing from Europe ultimately became known as the 'Americanization' of the country, and it was opposed by many European nations at the time.
