In 2008 he ran for Mayor of Bangor winning the Republican nomination and going onto fight Henry Hamlin, Lawyer. Taft pulled the victory home with 54% of the votes. His time as mayor was mostly spent on education reform and he was re-elected in 2012 with 57% of the votes against Judge Allan B. Hartley. In 2013 he announced his candidacy for Maine Secretary of State for the 2014 election. He swept the Republican nomination and faced Progressive-Democrat Library Clark Frida Jensen and Gregory won the election with 49% of the votes to Jensen's 46%. In 2018 he ran for the Governorship to succeed his dad and he swept the Republican nomination. He beat Democratic State Senator Ellen Schnaps with 54% of the votes. He has largely been a continuation of his father’s term.

In 2020 he hosted alongside Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the Northern American cup and in the opening act the men faced of in a penalty shootout which Taft won 5-2.

Gregory Taft II (March 4, 1979) is an American Politician, Veteran and member of the Taft family who is serving as Governor of Maine since 2019. He is the second of the Maine branch of the Taft family behind his father Gregory Taft I.

Born to Gregory Taft I and Dorothy Taft in Bath, Maine. Greg Jr lived a privileged life and attended the University of Pennsylvanian on a Soccer scholarship in 1999 and in 2000 his team won the All American Education Cup with Greg’s 6 goals. He graduated with a history bachelor’s degree and enlisted in the National guard where he got 3 low ranking military recognitions and retired as Private First Class in 2005. That year he married Kathrine Li, an elementary school teacher and in 2007 the couple had twins, Gregory III and Allan Kim Taft.
